Update: Yahoo completes HotJobs.com acquisition. Concurrent with its new strategy and business model Yahoo Inc. successfully completed its acquisition of HotJobs.com, the online job site that will now become its wholly owned subsidiary. Shareholders will receive 0.3045 in Yahoo stock and $5.25 in cash for their shares. Yahoo hopes that this move helps it build a diversified global presence and streamline revenue from other subscription services, as opposed to depending only on online advertising. Terry Semel, Yahoo's CEO, in a presentation to Wall Street Analysts, had set reducing such dependency on online advertising as a goal when Yahoo revenues fell 39% in the fourth quarter of 2000. In keeping with this strategy, non-advertising revenue has reached 25% of total sales, up from the figures of 13% in 2000. [onlinejournalism.com news briefs] # 101 7:49:56 PM . source

Disruptive Technology:
Two rabbits were being chased by a pack of wolves. The wolves chased the rabbits into a thicket. After a few minutes, one rabbit turned to the other and said, "Well, do you want to make a run for it or stay here a few days and out number them?" A few challenges for Google Intranet:
First, privacy.
Just because something is within the firewall doesn't make it free for all employees to see. Usually financial, employee, and legal information, for example, have controlled distribution. You have classes of people with different rights and permissions; contractors, temps, employees, managers, customers, suppliers, etc. Google assumes that all information is public.
Second, databased/application data.
For all the data found in email, office docs, and web content management, the most important data usually lives in special purpose systems. ERP/accounting systems, R&D/CAD management tools, CRM/sales, software configuration management systems, etc. Google does not typically mine structured data.
Third, citation.
I'm generalizing but a very few people within firms write web pages that contain the links Google uses to establish relevancy and page ranking. Google relies on many folks pointing to URIs to create statistical correlations. What happens when that data lives inside PeopleSoft? When nobody bothers to cite a document that is likely to move around?
Klogs will help.
- They'll help with the citation problem, as more people will make links.
- As apps start to generate RSS-like feeds for personal news aggregators, klogs will also point to structured data and transactions.
- Last, as firms really deploy directory services and use them for access control, expect klogs, Google, and news aggregators to respect circles of privacy.
The most important thing is that Google will start returning hits within the firewall; all else is tuning. # 98 6:30:34 PM .

Radio Feature Request: Availability Flags.
I want at least two flags set in Prefs.
First, my availability for Work.
- Actively looking, Receptive, Not Receptive (so employers can readily tell)
- Where I'm looking: geography (since employment is usually local)
- A link to my CV/resume page
Second, my availability for Romance.
- Actively looking, Receptive, Not Receptive
- What I am (SWJM/42)
- What I'm looking for ("Ambulatory?")
- A link to my About Me page
This will make both career and dating web services unusually practical, timely, and intertwined with my blogging. What do you think? # 97 11:51:22 AM .
