Thursday June 20, 6:30pm
Ristorante Don Giovanni
235 Castro Street (between Villa and Dana)
Mountain View CA
Driving Directions

rsvp: 1-650-917-1122

Foresight Vice President Ralph Merkle will lead the following discussion:

Foresight, since its founding in 1986, has moved many of the core concepts of nanotechnology from the lunatic fringe to mainstream acceptance: molecular machines, moving and assembling individual atoms and molecules, the very concept that (as Feynman put it in 1959) "...we can arrange the atoms the way we want; the very atoms, all the way down!" These concepts are now part of the mystique of that hottest of hot buzzwords, "nanotechnology."

There is one concept that has not yet made the jump into the mainstream: assemblers. Most still think assemblers are a far away dream, some even doubting they are possible. We have to move from "Well, yes, they are possible -- someday, somehow" to "Here's what we're going to do to make them."

Going to the moon took ~$20 billion, a decade, and a very clear focus on the objective. Building the first nuclear bomb likewise took money, time, and a clear focus. Building the first assembler is likely to require something similar -- how do we make this happen?
