Permalinks point to someplace besides your home page. Where? What should it look like?

Pascale would like a monthly list of posts by title.

"I'd like to see the monthly archive index pages be optionally titles only of posts, with links to the permalink entry. That would solve the problem of REALLY LONG PAGES for people who blog too much. P.S.: Of course they should be relative links. ;-) "

Paul Victor Novarese scripted this himself. Instructions and example.

Mikel Maron asks:

Is there anyway to turn off daily archives, leaving only monthly archives?

Will UserLand update the weblog calendar code to link to the monthly archives? [Assuming daily archiving turned off.]

One page per post. I'd also like the choice of also archiving each post to its own page, a unique url. This respects the atomic nature of the post (useful in citations) and could greatly improve the quality of search. On Tuesday I wrote about the Presidency and my cat. Someone pointing to my cat post may not care for my politics, and neither should the search engine. The only two things they have in common are the author and Tuesday. Archiving on separate pages makes intentional human links more valuable.

Distinct templates for category, monthly, daily, and post archives. I can dump some of my navigation overhead and streamline archive pages. Other enhancements are a better payload in an archive than on a home page. For example, Googled links to related topics (sometimes adding 10K per post) distract and slow down a home page but are affordable and relevant to an archive.

Append comments to archive page. Extract the thread of comments from wherever they live and put them in plain html following the post on its archived page. Be sure to give them styles for tailored formatting.

Duplicate archive with alternate template. Suitable for emailing or printing.

Master printout by category. I recently printed a hard copy of everything in my klogging category. It was a royal pain, opening up each archive page to printing. It would have been so useful to have one really large html page dump of the category. Unique template here too, please.

Multiple Permalinks per post. For lateral navigation. When a post is archived in multiple categories, I want a macro that lists that post's permalinks in each of them. "This post in category 1, category 4, category 9." Blank if only in this category. Useful in those archive templates.

Linkbacks. Who's pointing to this post? Archives are the natural place to put these, especially when you have one post per page.
