About the only sector of Japan’s economic life that is still growing: karoshi, or death from overwork. The number of Japanese working themselves to death is rising dramatically, particularly among white collar office workers. Newly released karoshi figures from Japan’s Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry, covering 2002, show a record 317 deaths that were directly attributable to long hours in the office. The previous record was 143, set just the previous year.
But experts believe the figures are a huge underestimate of the actual number killed by overwork. They believe the number of white collar workers putting their lives at risk could be as high as one million. Attract better talent by cutting back to a 50 hour workweek from 60, and forcing everyone to take at least two week vacations yearly. Checking your blood pressure wouldn't hurt either. Living, less stressed employees get more done and make better decisions.

Christian Crumlish writes: ... A tragedy befell a young musician and his extended family and friends in the bay area music community when Matthew Sperry was struck by a pickup truck and killed while riding his bicycle at an intersection near the Emeryville-Oakland border on Stanford Avenue. I didn't know Matthew, but I had several friends who knew and loved him, and played music with him, and loved his playing. A page at Scot Hacker's Birdhouse blog has become the de facto tribute page for Matthew. ...
There was a musical memorial at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland, and there is a memorial concert in the works. Hacker has also now set up a dedicated memorial web page for Matthew at matthewsperry.org. [aka Obituaries a la Blog]
life public policy
16-year-old gets life without parole for crime he committed at age 14. Very serious, madly violent, life threatening crimes. But nobody got hurt. imho, unjust sentencing for a juvenile. Children are by definition not done being formed. We have to move more trials back to family court or have superior court judges apply family court sentencing guidelines. And elect and appoint less cynical, more reasonable judges. I've got $20 for the campaign fund of anyone who runs against Orange County Superior Court Judge William Froeberg. We can do better.
