In my backyard (Oakland/Alameda area) here's what meetup.com says is top-of-mind:

  1. Dean in 2004 (1270 local members)
  2. Bookcrossing (160)
  3. Kerry in 2004 (94)
  4. LiveJournal (88)
  5. Kucinich in 2004 (83)
  6. Witches (65)
  7. Slashdot (63)
  8. Knitting (63)
  9. Clark in 2004 (62)
  10. Dashboard Confessional (59)
  11. Pagan (45)
  12. Weblogger (43)
  13. TravelChums (36)
  14. Ex-Jehovah's Witness (35)
  15. Java (31)
  16. Democratic Party (30)
  17. Buffy (29)
  18. French Language (29)
  19. Spanish Language (29)
  20. Million Moms (25)
  21. Tori Amos (23)
  22. Portuguese Language (23)
  23. Bill O'Reilly (22)
  24. Entrepreneur (22)
  25. Order of the Phoenix (22)

Pretty obvious this is Barbara Lee country.

I'm fascinated that

  • Tori Amos beats out Bill O'Reilly.
  • The other candidates will need to meet for 5 months just to match this month's Dean-heads.
  • Literacy is big. Languages, books, writing.
  • Meetup is a place for disorganized religions. Emergent faith?

  • These vary so much from town to town. Local zeitgeist?
  • I wonder how they change with time?
