Rick Klau says link rot isn't a problem.

Somebody should tell the researchers (and the authors, for that matter) about InfoMinder and Archive.org. InfoMinder will monitor any URL for you and tell you when they "rot", and Archive.org will show you the pages as they used to exist. This is a non-issue.

I wouldn't rank it up there with war in the middle east.

But it hurts my visitors.

Radio is a natural platform for creating web archives that shine brightly from a web of darkness.

Here's how.

  1. Spider your links well.
    • Nice that this is distributed to the desktop.
    • Spider periodic checks and follow-up confirmations.
  2. Report overall health.
    • Chronlogical distribution of happy links, as a percent each month.
  3. Host dead-link obituaries.
    • Newsfeed of dead links, linking to the page on your site, the dead destination, google and internet archive versions, and to the healer.
    • Syndicate decisions, helping other people heal similar dead links.
  4. Heal.
    • Simple ability to correct dead links by removal, commentary, or redirection.
    • Integration with your blogging/klogging tool makes healing and maintenance easy enough to do.

Overall, Radio hosted sites will be better relied upon and received. I can't imagine why all blog/klog tools wouldn't do this.
